L. alabb:
Early reports suggest very little enhanced meteor activity on the
night of November 11th, which was the predicted maximum for
the "Linearid" meteors predicted by meteor expert Joe Rao.
However, a pair of Czech scientists did note an increase in the
number of faint meteors detected with radar on that night, as
compared to the previous night. Whether these are "Linearids"
is unclear. Rao based his prediction on the realization that
Comet LINEAR (C/1999 J3) may have left a trail of debris that
Earth would encounter, because the comet's orbit comes just
1.7 million kilometers from intersecting the orbit of Earth. The
comet was closest to the Sun on September 20th and crossed
the ecliptic (plane of Earth's orbit) on October 2nd. The radiant
of any resulting shower should have been in the bowl of the Big
Dipper.
