A californiai nagy tűzek miatt elrendelték a Palomar hegyi obszervatorium
evakuálását is. Dél-Californiában alig látni az eget a füsttől és hamutól.
Egy ottani amatőr írta a következőket:

Sad news to report. I heard last night and again this morning on
local news that mandatory evacuations of Mt. Palomar have been
ordered. I sure hope they can button those domes up tight enough to
keep the astronomical treasures up there safe. I live in Pasadena
and the sky is so full of smoke that one cannot even see the night
sky. Just like a huge opaque cloud-deck overhead. I have not taken my
XT out last five nights. Too much white ash particles falling. Ash
and spider webs are not welcome in my OTA.
