                           3-rd International Astronomy Olympiad.
                                    Second announcement.
                     (SAO RAS, Nizhnij Arkhyz, October, 20-26, 1998.)

Dear collegues !

The International Astronomy Olympiad was founded by Euro-Asian
Astronomical Society on June, 7, 1996. The First and the Second
Olympiads took place at the Russian State Research Centre "Special
Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS)
in North Caucasus on 1-8.11.1996 and 22-28.10.1997. The next
competition will take place at SAO in the late October 1998.

According to Founding Statutes of the Olympiad it is held every
year sometime in the period from September till December in one
of the astronomical centres of the Olympiad member-states.
School children of several age groups take part in the Olympiad.
The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any
institutions of higher education.

According to Statutes of the Olympiad teams from the participating
states consisting of National Olympiad winners and prizewinners of
the previous International Olympiad take part in the Olympiad.

But !
IMPORTANT NOTE for interested participants in the Olympiad 1998:

According to the Statutes of the Olympiad, in the case of absence
of a National team from a state, the regions, cities and towns of
this state are responsible (by a permit of Coordinating Council)
to take part in the Olympiad.

Short infromation about the rules and programme of the
International Astronomy Olympiad 1998:

3-rd IAO will be organized at the Special Astrophysical Observatory
of Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) on October 20-26, 1998.
According to the Statutes of the Olympiad the competitors will
be divided in two age groups: grades 8-10 ( < 16 years old) and
grades 11-12 ( < 18 years old). Official languages of the Olympiad
- English and Russian. Problems will be prepared by the Organizing
Committee in these two languages and the leaders are responsible
to translate tasks to native languges of participants. Character
of the problems to solve will be analogous to ones of the
Olympiads 1996-1997.

Participation fee - about US$ 300 for 1 person, other
expenses will be covered by the Organizing Committee.
(These US$ 300: incl. visa support expenses if all data
about participants will be received before August 19;
excl. visa support expenses - after August 19.)

3 participants not older 16 years old (born after 20.10.1982).
2 participants not older 18 years old (born after 20.10.1980).
2 leaders (speialists in astronomy or astronomy education).

NOTE: possible without points 7-9 if passport not ready, all other
points must be filled; do not write "as last year" instead concrete
figures.

ATTENTION: To be sure for obtaining Russian visas full data
about every proposed participant and leader must be known not
later the first days of September! May be difficulties later.

Those who are interested to get further information about the
Olympiad (including official invitations for teams and observers,
take into account: visa support is necessary for citizens of some
countries!) are welcome to contact Coordinating Council in English
or Russian.
